How to write an article that is SEO friendly?

A lot of people struggle with writing article, and even if you are a good writer, you will desire to rank on the first page in Google. How to write an article, that is easy to read, SEO friendly and at the same time engaging? Believe me or not its quite easy!

As a big fan of search engine optimisation, I would like to share with you my step-by-step guide that will help your blog post to be SEO friendly and rank high.

I think writing a good blog post that will stay on the last page of Google is just a waste of time.

For those that are monetising they articles, having SEO friendly content is the key to success!

If the whole process sounds a bit scary, no need to worry, I will try to simplify it in my step-by-step guide.

how to write an article

How to write an article:

1. Don't be scared to write!

how to write an article

First of all, you have to realise that writing an article is different from writing an essay or diploma work. Everybody can write a quality blog post; all you need to know is some fundamental pillars.

Using your voice is essential. If you feel you are not a good article writer and some writers are better, get rid of those thoughts. Don't try to be someone else; just be yourself. Simply start communicating with your readers, like with a friend whom you want to tell some vital information.

Don't overthink it. Your article should be informative and straightforward.

2. Do your research

Research your topic

What are you going to talk about? Try to gain as much information as possible, and use only highly trusted sources. By providing accurate and relevant information, you have a better chance to impress your reader and beat your competitors. Never write about something you’re not sure.

Research your target audience

Ask yourself, “what questions are people asking,” and try to answer them. Your main task is to help people, so try to uncover as much information as possible. Providing a solution or personal recommendations is incredible. You can quickly gain the trust of your audience.

Research the best keyword

This part is essential. While targeting a keyword, you will be targeting your audience.

Surely you’ll be interested in reaching more people, and at the same time, escaping from the competition.

how to write an article
Let me show you one example

Let's say you would like to write a blog about dog training.

The first keyword you will research is "dog training." We are using a Jaaxy keyword research tool. You can use it for FREE with 30 searches a day.

As you can see, on average, 24,284 people are searching for this term monthly. If you rank for this keyword, your traffic can be up to 4,129 potential readers. However, just have a look at the competition 271 websites are ranking for this keyword. The chances for you to beat the competition is just 41 from 100, which is literally impossible. This keyword is too broad.

The next thing to look into is what "dog training" people are searching for? This keyword is very wide; therefore, the next keyword you might be checking is "how to train a dog."

This is the keyword you need to go after.

As you can see, the potential traffic is quite high 7512. Competition is good; just 143, and you have the opportunity to get ranked high as well. To catch a reader’s attention, you might name your article something like "Top 10 tips on how to train a dog."

3.  Determine the length of your article and break it down.

At this point, you might have some basic ideas about your future content. Based on that, you might know roughly the amount of information you can share. The more information you know, the more value you can offer to your readers. Write down all the essential facts and choose the top five or ten that you are going to talk about in your blog post.

Now, you have to determine approximately how long your post will be. To be well ranked I recommend you to stick with around 2,000 words. Longer articles have more chances for better rankings.

So let’s say your article is 2000 words long. You can break it into 5-7 main topics, including the conclusion. Now for each topic, you have around 300 - 400 words. Isn’t that much easier? Good content must be informative, helpful and easy to read at the same time.

Start writing without stressing yourself much. If you are just a beginner, writing your first draft might help you to achieve incredible results. You will be surprised at your capabilities to write a long blog post.

4.  Headings and paragraphs

Headings and paragraphs are essential for easy reading and capture the readers' attention.

Your article should have a good structure with main headers and constructive information.

A lot of visitors, while coming to your posts for the first time, will visually scan all the important information you’re providing, and headers are the navigation for them.

Make your headers catchy, and your paragraphs short, no longer than 300 words. Reading long sections can be dull.

Readers are searching for the specific information and want to find it as fast as possible, so help them! If your article contains a lot of empty details, you might lose some of your readers right on the spot.

5.  Properly use your keyword

using keywords in blogpost

To catch the right audience, you have to use the right keyword. It's not about intensively sprinkling keywords on your blog; it's about naturally written content with keywords.

Use your keyword:

  • In the first paragraph
  • A few times within the content
  • At least one time in the header (H2)
  • As your final word

Target only one keyword within the article. Don't forget that your primary goal is to help others find answers to their questions.

6.  Make your content catchy

Important information should be at the beginning.

At the beginning of your content, ideally, in the first paragraph, try to explain what you’ll be talking about briefly.

Point out the most important information right at the beginning. It will help your audience evaluate whether to continue reading the post or not.

"Decorate" your content

By decorating, I mean to catch your readers’ visual attention. You can do it by bolding the text, using a different colourunderlining important informationor using an italic text.

Try to use appropriate pictures, graphs or pictures that are pointing to important facts. Your content will be more catchy and enjoyable.

7.  Make it an SEO friendly article

For those who are not familiar with SEO (Search Engine Optimization), it is a complete process of optimizing a website so the potential clients can find it easily on search engines.

Knowing how to write an article which is SEO friendly will help you in ranking. An SEO friendly article is a type of content that has a purpose of attracting potential readers from the search engines.

Writing an SEO friendly article is quite important because by optimizing your content you are helping people find you.

If you follow our main guidelines, You have a great chance to rank high in search engines. Learn how to do on-page SEO as well!

Tips for SEO friendly article.

Transition words

Try using transition words usually, if you are writing naturally and explaining something by using your voice, transition words will appear automatically. The recommended minimum of those words is 30%.

Use subheadings and sub-session

It will help your audience to read the text easily as I said before lots of people scanning the content with eyes right before reading it.

Nobody wants to waste time, and that's where subheadings help to evaluate whether your blog post contains the information they are searching or not.

Engage your audience by using the right keywords in subtitles. Don't forget that your subheading should be relevant to your text.

Make your paragraphs short

Generally, it's recommended to have paragraphs shorter than 300 words. Try to make paragraphs between 100 - 150 words. Short sections are much more comfortable to read.

Use short sentences

By using short sentences, you can easily express your thoughts.

Remember good writing will always contain a mix of short, medium and long sentences. The 2000 words long article which includes only short sentences won't look natural.

Avoid a passive voice

Passive voice is something that appears while writing naturally as well but for SEO it's unwanted. The recommended maximum of using passive voice is just 10%.

Passive voice considered to be a type of distant writing and it's unclear who or what is acting. This type of text is hard to read and is unattractive.

At this point, you might be thinking of how hard it is to follow all those guidelines. To help you optimize your content for the search engines, you can use Yoast SEO which contains a Content Analysis Tool and its absolutely for free.

This analysis tool can be helpful especially for bloggers and website owners. You can optimize the website content quickly. It helps you to see what improvements are needed and where exactly.

As you can see, there is an eye icon. After clicking on it, it will show you exactly what you need to fix.

Below is the analysis from one of my article. I just merely wrote my thoughts, and I am quite happy about my results. The more readily you are writing, the better results you will have. So don't be discouraged by marketing tools, you can use them, but you don't have to stress about them.

what is an on page seo

As you see, I have two improvements.

The first one is a text section which is longer than 300 words. To improve that I will break that text into 2 parts.

To solve the second issue I will rewrite one or two sentences.

How to write an article - Conclusion

Simple, informative, and naturally written articles will beat your competitors. So be one of those, who are trying to provide helpful information.

Up to 75% of readers' scan the article with their eyes to find pertinent information.

  1. Great article because I ‘m a little unsure or insecure about my SEO, but after reading this I feel more confident.

I use Yoast SEO and follow what they see as correct, but have always questioned it because there are so many SOE plugins available that want to be right.

Thanks for this and I am going over my earlier posts to check them out once again

    1. Hi Stew,

thanks for stopping by. I am glad to help you. Yoast is one of the famous SEO plugins with more than 8 million users. Its very simple to use… I would not go for other plugin.

  2. Hi Halyna,

I know I struggle with writing articles! I am glad I found your writing guide to help me out. I see one of the tools you use is the Jaaxy keyword tool. I see it has 30 free searches, but how much is the cost after the free searches are over? It looks like it make the keyword research much easier! And even tells me my competition, and how to rank well, that’s great!

Great tips on keeping sentences and paragraphs short! I know I have a bad habit of being too wordy and my sentences go on forever! Headlines are also hard for me to write good ones> Do you know of any(free) tool that might help me write better, catchy headlines? Thanks for this guide, I am going to refer back to this quite often.

  3. Writing articles to SEO rank for low competition keywords is very fun and exciting to me. Your tips will help tune up my writing and SEO techniques. Keeping paragraphs short and using catchy headings is critical. Researching a topic, keywords and audience is vital to make a good outline for writing a quality article.

I am surprised you didn’t mention length of article because I think search engines like a sufficient amount of information in an article, but I have also heard that real long articles (like 3000 words or more) don’t rank well. I write medium sized (1200-2500 words) quality content articles and try to get plenty of comments.

    1. Hi Alexander,

thank you for stopping by :)

I am glad you found this post useful.

I have mentioned my recommended lenght, in section  “Determine the length of your work and break it down”. Actually what i suggested is aprox. 1000 words :). The light of your articles is just perfect! I have heard some SEO professional having articles even 5000 words long, but you need to do a good on page SEO to rank well.

Wish you a lot of success!

  4. I was searching google for How to write an article and found your site. I really appreciate how you broke down how to use Jaaxy because I currently have the free version and have been tinkering with it for keywords. I was under the impression however, the you are supposed to go keywords that have a QSR of 30 or under? I thought that if it was higher than 30 it would be impossible to rank. Am I wrong? Was I given the wrong information about Jaxxy and how to find the right keyword? I want to find the right answer of course.

Also I learned that not only are you supposed to use your keyword in the header and in your first paragraph, but that your ALSO need to put it a few times within your content and in the last paragraph. I didn’t know this. I am going to go back to all of my articles and adjust a few things after reading your post. I really appreciate all the advice you gave me which will be applied and I also have bookmarked your site for future reference.

    1. Hi Sophia,

      thank you for the comment.

So, the QSR in keyword has a lot to do with how old is your website and what authority it has… in case you have a  brand new site i suggest to go for the keyword which is under 100 QSR. If your site has some history then around 150 QSR is good. Is most of your posts having QSR under the 30? If it is then great work, as most of your post should be on the first page in Google! What about volume of your visitors?

In case you have some more questions let me know.

Wish you a lot of success!

  5. julienne murekatete

Thank you for sharing with us this great post on how to write an article.Writing article is not an easy work because it requires keywords which can attracts visitors and in return help us to make money.

Using Content editor after writing article is very helpful because we can’t write mistakes as it helps in removing them.

This post contains many tips which will help me in my future writings.

    1. Hi Julienne, thank you for stopping by. I am glad you found my posts useful. You are right, the content has to be interesting and you can make it only by using catchy and useful keywords. Readers are scaring with eyes and I think this is number one factor if they stay on your site…

  6. Thanks a lot for such thorough explanation on how to write. I must say that I have a big problem with writing and I often outsource my content which cost very high. This tips that you gave will definitely help me to improve my skills as a writer but I think that exercise is also very important.

    1. Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your comment. I can imagine the price of outsourced content… The worst part of it is that it will be always explained differently than your own thoughts… Exercise is important, but I think even with very detailed research you can easily write 2000 words.. all depends on the topic.

Wish you a lot of success!

  7. You have written a great guide for article writing. A person new to writing on line could easily make a list from this post to review their blog posts or any type of article, review and figure out their better and weaker points. It has a down side

I have used Yoast and it can be a good way to go to get your parameters tweaked.

It was chosen for two different site owners who solicited content but went overboard in post analysis, to my mind. It was difficult to get things published and those sites didn’t last.

But until we get really top of our game guides are needed and you have written a good one!

    1. Hi there,

      thank you for stopping by!

I am glad you found my post useful. This post is mainly for beginners or for those who want to rank well with their articles and improve their on-page SEO.

SEO nowadays is getting more and more crucial. People can write great content but for some reasons, it won’t rank well. I saw some content of 400 words are ranking in Google better then those with 1000 words and the main reason is how well your content can be optimised so search engines will understand what is it all about…

As one of my best SEO gurus says: “Google is not a human, its a robot with algorithm”.

  8. I really enjoyed this article and the tips you gave. I can see you’re following your own advice as well. Your article is well put together and was easy to follow. I especially loved the bit on keyword research. Keyword research was something that was completely eye opening to me when I first came across it. What an integral tool for putting together an article that gets real traffic! Nicely done!

    1. Hi Eric,

I am glad to be useful. There are so many writers around the world that can create amazing content but sometimes it won’t be ranking at all. One of the main reason is an on-page SEO and the second it’s hard to read the text because it’s long, without pictures and catchy headers. Wish you a lot of success!

  9. This is a really helpful article review. I  would say I have gained more confidence about writing my own article. I have learnt from this article that I have to be myself and know my target audience, also, I’ve learnt how to get ranked by SEO with my chosen keyword. This is really wonderful piece of information. Thanks. Good job here. Welldone.

    1. Hey, thanks for taking the time and reading my post.

I am glad to help! I think the length and quality of the post are the keys to rank well. Backlinks have no competition but with a good on-page SEO, long tail keywords and quality article, chances to rank are high!

      Have a nice day

  10. This is a great article.  As a writer myself I always have people asking that exact question.  I think people get a little to scared because it sounds terrifying to put 2000 words to paper and then to put them on the internet.

Your how to article is spot on and anyone having any problems should look into this article.  I especially love the part when you tell us how and when to use the keywords.

Thank you for putting this information together and for sharing it with us.  This is an article that Im sure is going to get a lot of traffic.  Great job.

  11. There is so much education in this post. Me for instance has been struggling to write article for my blog. Sometimes I use three days to write one football article.  The reason is just that I don’t do research but just want to write with my head alone and want it to be perfect outrightly. Another problem I’m having is struggling to use  keyword research machine like jaaxy. Can you help me on this?

  12. Writing an article is sometimes challenging You need to be precise and straightforward when passing a message across to the readers no beating around the bush and you must be able to make your write up lengthy and at the same time brief making your research before you start is very important you would be able to know the full details of what you’re writing about without making any mistake the admin did a great job putting this post up very incisive post nice job.

  13. Thanks for sharing this article on how to an article. Thus is super nice. I have to know some steps and arrangements that I font know or use to. You post informative articles on your website. I as am impressed with the Jaaxy that you sighted in the article showing the importance of search key words. Thanks very much.

  14. This is an amazing article from the shelves of snaprisk, I  love the fact that it is so revealing and expository. This is just what newbies and potential bloggers in the blogging and creative writing fields need, the Jaaxy tool itself on my opinion is a major revolution and I believe that a mastery in its usage would lead to a massive generation of traffic. Thanks.

  15. Good afternoon Halyna,

I like writing so that is not the problem. What sometimes is a problem is my English as I am not a native speaker. Luckily Grammarly helps in most cases but neither is it infallible, that means you will still have to use your brain.

The part which I found interesting was where you tell about Transition Words. As I am not conscious of using them I will pay more attention to this part of writing a post.

I know I should make my paragraphs shorter. Luckily, as I rotate my website on a regular basis to get comments I notice if paragraphs are too long and can loosen the text. Thank you for these helpful tips.

    Regards, Taetske

  16. Thank you for sharing this article. Choosing a reliable site on the Internet to work with, is very difficult without any guideline or mentors. This article is very interesting and the inclusion of pros and cons part makes it easy to understand. This post is very helpful for me and hopes to read many other review articles about online marketing apps in near future.

  17. Thanks for this educative post, it helps know the needful in writing an article for beginners who are new in creating contents on their websites by Choosing a topic that interests you enough to focus on and making good paragraphs and headings to capture readers attention. I must say this was indeed very helpful.

  18. This is an awesome article post it just reflects the ugliness behind the success that is in entrepreneurship the part that got to me especially was the part that said ‘The Middle name of Entrepreneurship’, where it talked about taking risks as being the middle name of entrepreneurship, it is also made mention of how some of the world’s greatest entrepreneurs made some ‘mistakes’ and took some risks which seemed somewhat ridiculous to most people. In all of these, I have learnt from Mark’s oculus story, that it is important to check out for the long term gains from any venture. Cheers.

  19. Hi Halyna,

Thank you for sharing this great informative post. I was impressed by reading this article. Before reading this article I had no idea about writing an article. After reading your article, I learned about writing articles and increased my confidence. I will always follow you while writing from now on. I learned how my preferred keywords could be transferred by SEO. I like keyword research myself; a good keyword can increase traffic to your website. Keyword study was something that was completely open to the eye when I first came across it. Traffic will be back to your site for a good keyword. I’m going to use Jaxxy keyword, what would you say it would be like? This is an amazing section of information. I’ll definitely come back to your next article. Thank you.
