What is Shopify About?

At its core, Shopify is an e-commerce platform. Therefore, it aims to let users establish, grow, and manage a business. This online selling portal relies on the Internet and a good web browser. Hence, you won't have to download anything to your PC. You also don't have to worry about software upgrades or maintenance.

Shopify is a great place if you're looking to sell products (or a few services) online. Above all, you don't have to be an expert web developer to start a Shopify business. Also, you don't need a Master's Degree in a business course to start. Still, it'll help a lot if you do. Nonetheless, this platform is the "one stop shop" for all things e-commerce for many people.

How to sign up?

It's easy to create a Shopify account. To clarify, all you need is a few moments of your time (and perhaps your credit card). Once you create an account, here's a brief overview of what you'll get:

  • An on-site website builder
  • Hundreds of free themes plus premium themes
  • Several site customization options
  • A user-friendly dashboard
  • Manage orders, shipping, and payments without leaving the site
  • The option to use either the free Shopify or personal subdomain
  • Unlimited disk space

If you're unsure if you want to spend $13 USD right off the bat, there is  a 14-Day Free Trial. The creation of your site pits your business in the middle of the e-commerce world. As a result, choose from over 70 payment gateways with unique checkout options. Furthermore, your site can cater to a global customer base. It's because the site supports over 50 languages.

Is it the best e-commerce platform?

It's still too early to answer that question. But, we'll get to that point. For now, it's important to note that it's not the only way to make money online. For instance, there's Wealthy Affiliate. I'll be getting to more of that affiliate marketing program in a bit. For now, let's continue with Shopify.

How Does Shopify Work?

When you're trying to figure out what is Shopify about, you're also thinking of how it works. Before anything else, you need to create an account. Are you still unsure at this point? If so, Shopify offers a free 14-day trial. Merchants (like you) can use this time to test the platform. Take note, you'll have more limitations for the free trial than the Basic plan.

What is Shopify about

To know how Shopify works, let's take a look at a few of the common questions asked by individuals like you.

What to Sell on Shopify?

Your imagination controls the limit for the items you can sell on Shopify. In other words, there are near-endless possibilities on what you can sell on this platform. You can sell things like:

  • Coffee, tea
  • Fine Art
  • Food
  • Clothing
  • Apparel
  • Temporary Tattoos
  • Software
  • Technologies and gadgets
  • And many more

As long as it's a physical or digital product, you can list it for sale on your Shopify site. You may even want to sell a service if you desire.

How is Selling a Service Possible on Shopify?

Let's think about that question with a scenario.

For example, you're trying to gather new customers to your at-home massage service.

You can use Shopify to advertise these relaxation services to your preferred audience.

Also, your customers can book the service right from the site.

How Can Shopify Help My Online Store Grow?

Shopify offers a comprehensive site builder and a marketing suite in one portal.

Any business in many industries will find it to scale their sites to suit specific needs.

Also, you can use many opportunities from Shopify to reach new audiences.

But, you can only do these tasks with the Shopify and Advanced Shopify plans. More on that subject in a bit.

You can most certainly can! Bear in mind, you have complete control of the ins-and-outs of your Shopify site. Therefore, you can add internal and external links to content. Also, you have flexibility to place your affiliate links anywhere you wish on your business' site.

What are the Pricing Plans of Shopify?

I made a table to let you see Shopify's pricing plans. As you can see, the Basic Shopify package gives you, well, the basics of starting an online business. You have the main website, its inner pages, and a dedicated blog. Furthermore, you can sell an unlimited number of products right off the bat. Also, Shopify grants you access to their customer support. This feature is already available when you choose the basic package.

The benefits of moving up a plan

If you choose the Basic package, you'll have to deal with certain limitations. For instance, you only have two admin accounts for the site. Furthermore, you can't send gift cards, create reports, or calculate third-party shipping rates.

Move up to the [aptly named] Shopify package. In here, you'll get to send gift cards and gain access to professional site reports. Still, you can't use the advanced report builder or calculate third-party shipping rates.

The Advanced Shopify Plan

Choose the highest plan on Shopify. If you do, you'll use all the features from the previous packages, and more. For instance, you can give administrative access to a total of 15 accounts. Also, you can now use the advanced report builder. Don't forget, you can also use calculate third-party shipping prices with this plan.

Take note, there are different availabilities for the features on each Shopify package. Still, the main difference is on the transaction fees. The Basic plan has a 2% transaction fee. Above all, these charges go down when you choose higher-tiered packages.

Who are the Founders of Shopify?

Shopify comes from the brilliant mind of three people. The owners of Shopify are Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake. Let's take a look at these founders in more detail, shall we?

Let's start with Tobias Lütke

Tobias Lütke

Tobias, or Tobi Lütke founded and operates Shopify. He grew up in Germany where he learned the essentials of coding. At the age of 12, he started understanding programming languages. At the age of 16, he left school. In doing so, he became an apprentice to a computer programming firm.

It wasn't until Tobias and his friend attempted to open an online shop. It was an online store selling snowboards. However, their search for a decent software ended in vain. Ultimately, the setback helped the partners realize to create an online selling platform. After other challenges, Shopify came to existence.

Then, There's Daniel Weinand

Daniel Weinand

Daniel Weinand is a co-founder of Shopify. He has a message to tell all aspiring online entrepreneurs. In an interview with entrepreneur.com, he says:

"With every failure I experienced, there was an opportunity to come out even stronger."

Remember, we talked about Tobias' friend who helped him build Shopify? That friend is Daniel. He's also the Chief Design Officer of this online selling platform. He's an advocate for business success, even with many the many failures he experienced. Most importantly, Daniel is a firm believer of learning from our mistakes.

Last, There's Scott Lake

Scott Lake

Like Daniel and Tobias, Scott Lake is a co-founder of Shopify. However, he's also a startup entrepreneur, philanthropist, and tech investor. He's also the founder of Source Metrics, but that's for another story.

What is Shopify About? Will It Work for You?

Before we proceed with this topic, let's make one thing clear first. Remember, Shopify isn't a "get rich quick" scheme. It's an online selling platform made for newbie entrepreneurs and veteran business people. In other words, you still have to put in the work to help you earn income from the site.

It also gives users many options to customize websites. That is to say, there are many extensions available for you to incorporate on your Shopify site. A few of these plug-ins include:

  • Shopify shipping
  • Numerous dropshipping apps
  • A mobile management system
  • Amazon and eBay integrations

The PROS of Shopify:

  • No limitations for the number of products
  • Numerous payment processing options
  • Excellent site speed and performance
  • Many themes to fit various store niches
  • The ability to sell both digital and physical procuts
  • Shopify POS integration
  • Professional reports (on specific plans)
  • An extensive self-help documentation

The CONS of Shopify:

  • Advanced features are only accessible at higher-tiered packages.
  • Some apps aren't free.
  • No built-in email hosting feature. Still, you have the option to integrate services like MailChimp.

Conclusion

Make no mistake; Shopify is an excellent selling platform. Many benefits in-store for you when you choose Shopify to sell your products and services. For example, its reasonably-priced plans means it's excellent for startups to large corporations. Also, hundreds of free and premium themes are available to use. Take advantage of these themes to fit any business on this platform.

You may still be on the fence to try Shopify. Even after reading my review, chances are you're still thinking about the question, "What is Shopify about?" If so, then you can try out the selling platform for 14 days. Also, you don't have to pay a single cent during this period.
